Description: After providing an introduction to climate issues, this workshop focuses on two concepts and sets of tools: (1) measuring your organization's "carbon footprint" or greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory; and (2) understanding and defining "climate risk" for your organization. The course is intended for managers in the public and private sectors. Participants will leave with tools and guidance for leading change in their organizations.
The short opening segment on climate basics will provide a high-level summary of climate science and policy, with guidance for using available resources for greater depth as needed. The middle segment of the workshop will provide tools, techniques, and managerial content related to conducting a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory (or carbon footprint) for government agencies and corporations. Topics covered will include identification of key emissions sources, setting inventory boundaries, and laying a foundation for effective climate action in your organization. Participants will draw on several helpful GHG inventory protocols. The workshop will also build participants' capacity to define organization-specific issues, communication, and climate action. This section will address a number of publicly available GHG inventories as guiding examples. The third segment of the workshop will provide tools for identifying climate risk, an organization's exposure to changes in commerce as a result of global warming. The workshop will cover major categories of risk, such as energy price risk, impacts of likely federal and state regulations, and physical changes in climate. The workshop goal is to generate insights, templates, and tools for raising the level of action-oriented analysis and executive understanding inside participating organizations. |
