TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM
The Need for EE Teacher Training
EE is nearly absent in K-12 public education. As a result, our children
are growing up disconnected from nature and are graduating with little or
no sense of environmental awareness or stewardship. To confront these issues,
the U.S. Congress passed the Environmental Education Act of 1990 to coordinate
EE efforts at federal, state, and local levels, as well as to promote the
exchange of information and publicize model programs to encourage their emulation
around the country. Most states have similar EE acts. However, few states,
including Washington, have implemented these directives on a large scale.
Providing Teacher Training
NWEEC is developing partnerships with the Environmental Education
Association of Washington (EEAW), individual schools, and other educational
institutions to provide EE teacher training services. NWEEC has been recruiting
a network of highly skilled and experienced environmental educators to train
a cadre of teacher trainers throughout the Northwest. In addition, NWEEC staff
are enrolled in EE teacher training programs developed by the North American
Association of Environmental Education (NAAEE). Following the completion of
these training programs, NWEEC staff will lead teacher training workshops
and facilitate EE curriculum development.
Staff and Funding for Teacher Training
NWEEC's Teacher Training Program is funded by net funds from NWETC's programs
and public and private grants solicited by NWEEC,
teachers, and their institutions. The teacher training workshops will be facilitated
by experienced volunteer EE teachers and NWEEC Staff. Teacher training events
are free for public school teachers and administrators.
